FROM MICROSCOPES TO telescopes, macro lenses to telezooms and 35mm SLRS to models boasting pixel- packed sensors, Nikon has long been at the cutting edge of harnessing light technologies. For the past century, Nikon has surpassed all expectations by creating breakthrough products that improve photography, change the industry and place advanced cameras into the palms of the public. It’s the many innovations for professional and amateur photographers alike though that laud Nikon as a brand for high quality and for delivering photographic excellence.

Through the decades, Nikon has made such prolific leaps in image- making that it’s literally created products that take out of this world images, but the brand had quite a humble beginning. Roll back the years to 1917 and the Nikon Corporation was established in Japan with a focus on producing only optical lenses – so it's no surprise that the NIKKOR range is held in such high acclaim. But while it wasn’t until 1948 that Nikon launched its first small- sized camera, bearing the name Nikon Model 1, it was the start of developments that changed photography for the generations to come – leading to the 35mm SLR and now digital SLR. As advanced as its technologies become, at the heart of its class- leading DSLRS and world- renowned NIKKOR lenses is its history, rooted in the original F mount, first seen in 1959. Initially designed for 35mm SLRS, the F mount continues to live on, proving Nikon not only pioneers change, but designs products that stand the test of time.

Nikon's success has put its cameras in the hands of professional press, sports and war photographers on the frontline of 20th and 21st Century history, capturing humanity’s most moving, celebratory and landmark moments. Nikon's advances have also given amateur photographers the ability to capture high- quality images – and video – that might once have seemed impossible. With each leap in technology, Nikon lifts the ceiling on creativity a little bit higher so that the tools you use never hold you back from capturing what you want. Whether it be from high altitudes, in the frigid cold, desert heat – or even outer space – Nikon kit is designed so you never have to miss a shot.

When considering Nikon’s achievements in the last century – its FX- format sensor, blowing up the pixel race and pioneering HD video to name but a few – you’d think the brand deserves a rest. But whilst 100 years might sound like a long time in the photographic business, this is an early milestone for Nikon. It plans to take its products to new frontiers in the future and lead photography to unimaginable heights. For more visit: www. nikon. com/ 100th/
