“How could any self- respecting photographer resist a calm, pristine beach, lovely reflections in the sand and attractive pastel tones? I like Neil’s simple, yet effective composition. But, there is one obvious issue with this shot – nasty colour fringing ( chromatic aberration) along the cliffs and on the edges of the rocks. This is easily corrected in processing – for example, Lightroom has a tool to automatically remove fringing. I would also favour using an optical ND grad at the time of capture, as opposed to underexposing to protect highlights. Noise is most prevalent in shadow areas, so if you intentionally underexpose and then lighten the file in post, you increase noise. Finally, to my eye, Neil has revealed a little too much detail in the cliffs when dodging and burning, giving a slight HDR look. This might be what he wanted to achieve but, being a bit of a traditionalist myself, would favour a slightly more natural look.”
