THE ROBOTS ARE COMING

IS AUTOMATION A NECESSARY evil or just the progression of technology? It’s a topic that’s a very real issue in many lines of work – from manufacturing to packaging companies, and now, portrait photographers! IRIS is a new automated photo booth that’s arrived in the U. S, claiming that it can capture “professional– quality” images in just a few seconds, for as little as USD$ 20! The booth gives users a choice of six high- key headshots from a fixed focal length and even allows them to edit their own images with smart blemish removal, brightening and teeth whitening. Going by the carefully selected example images on the website, the results look good enough, but surely a flash and a lens are no replacement for a photographer's creative vision and experience? IRIS booths are currently in nine locations around the U. S, with more to follow in the near future. What do you think? Can photography become entirely automated?
