Demanding better from politicians and the media

As we approach Pride season, it’s likely the Great British Media, which normally ignores our existence, will be saturated with rainbow flags, cheering on the gays as we embark on a hedonistic summer of wild abandon. And so it should. When heteropatriarchy rains on your parade for 364 days a year, it’s only right our literal parade is given some attention. But while Pride generates a considerable amount of media interest, it’s often little more than lip service, and it tends to benefit a certain kind of gay. You know, those rich white ones. Meanwhile, the rest of us continue our lives in the shadows, subject to ridicule and hate, and the various reasons we march are whitewashed or ignored altogether. I don’t think that’s good enough. Our lives are rich and diverse all year round – not just during Pride month – and we deserve more than their scraps. So if your favourite newspaper or website isn’t doing enough for its LGBT readers, let them know. Send them a tweet, or a letter if you’re old-fashioned like me. If they’re in breach of media codes, complain to the relevant body. And if you’re still not satisfied, take your money, your clicks and your eyeballs elsewhere. Be proud, stand tall, and demand more from your media. We’re worth it. @Seej
