WHY WE LOVE PRIDE
CARE Fertility’s Kathryn Bryant on the meaning of Pride
Pride season is the LGBT community’s Thanksgiving, with a bit more glitter and a lot less turkey.
It is that time of year where we come together in all major UK cities, to celebrate and give thanks with acknowledgement to the LGBT activists that have marched before us. They campaigned for our human rights, fought for equality and demonstrated their courage and strength by being visible to society.
July 1972 saw the UK’S first Gay Pride march, held in London. It was a very political march combined with a carnival atmosphere. Almost 1,000 people turned up, knowing the threat of violence from members of the public or arrest by the police who attended in huge numbers. Marchers were met with verbal abuse and the odd hurled bottle as well as homophobic slurs from the police, but also with support from well-wishers.
What an impact 35 years of marching and activism has made for our community. We celebrate in 2017 with equality and visibility. The crowd cheers, the police line the streets, joining in our celebration and marching alongside us in unity. We give thanks for the LGBT rights that we now have in the UK. How far we have come. And yet we still march to protest that our LGBT brothers and sisters in other countries are not as free as we are. We march and party with our friends and families to celebrate protection from discrimination, the repeal of Section 28, same-sex marriage and the right to create our own families. Pride represents all these themes, and we attend with our individual families and an enormous LGBT+ ally family; one that stretches across the UK and the world.
CARE Fertility will be celebrating alongside the LGBT community this Pride season throughout the UK. You’ll see our teams at Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield and Pride In London. The organisation understands the history of Pride and the progress made for LGBT rights in family planning and creating your own rainbow family.
We’ll be kicking off the UK Pride season with representatives who are expert in all areas of fertility at Pride In The Park and UK Black Pride on Sunday 9 July at London’s Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. Come along and speak to one of us if you’re looking for information on fertility treatment for you and/or your partner, or just come and say hello and have a dance with the team.
Pride season is about love, equality and family – whatever that word means to you. CARE Fertility understands family is for everyone and the team wants to share their knowledge and help lesbian, bisexual and transgender women create their own family if fertility treatment is their chosen route to parenthood. There are so many options for same-sex couples and we’re proud to be one of the first clinics in London to have helped lesbians and bisexual women conceive.
CARE Fertility wish you all a wonderful Pride. We look forward to seeing you and being part of your family.
