Rena Brannan’s low-down on the hottest new releases

There’s something about a girls’ boarding school and there is something about Sofia Coppola that sticks in the mind even if you’ve never come in contact with either. A seminal 1970s Hollywood filmmaker, her father Francis Ford Coppola often had Sofia on set and this apprenticeship has stood her in good stead: her own well-received films include Lost In Translation and The Virgin Suicides. Her remake of Don Siegel’s 1971 take on Thomas Cullinan’s novel is set in the South during the American Civil War. A tale of sex, revenge and the pitfalls of southern hospitality, revisiting The Beguiled from a woman’s point of view is exhilarating. Stars include Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning and Colin Farrell. #LEZZGO In cinemas 14 July
