Paradise found for five

Dumfries & Galloway Standard - - NEWS -

Five friends completed a charity challenge with a difference by sitting on every seat in Celtic Park. It took the pals nine-and-a-half hours to complete the 60,000 seat marathon in memory of Dumfriesshire’s John Maurice Aitken who died of cancer.

His bothers Kevin and Ciaran, Dumfries pals Gordon Moffat and Gary McMenamin, and Greg O’Donnell from Cumbernauld, shared the pain of each sitting in 12,000 seats.

John’s sister Claire carried out a similar challenge at Palmerston earlier this month.

Between them they have helped raise more than £25,000 in recent years for the JMA Trust.

John died in 2014 after a cancer battle – a week short of his 33rd birthday.

The former St Joseph’s College pupil was a keen Celtic and Annan fan and the grant-giving trust is his legacy, set up by family and friends.

It has already paid out thousands of pounds to help many worthy causes across the region and beyond.
