From left to right: Bailey Thomson, Owen Rae and Ewan Duignan represented Scotland at the U11s Conference Series competition at the weekend Three local players represented Scotland at the inaugural U11s Conference Series tournament, held at Dumfries Ice Bowl at the weekend.

Ewan Duignan and Bailey Thomson from Dumfries and Owen Rae from Lockerbie, who all play for Solway Sharks Juniors U12s team, joined more than 120 players and staff from all over the UK who gathered in Dumfries for the competition.

The teams played 10 games in just under 12 hours, with first face off at 6.45am.

Hosts Scotland rebounded from losing the first match of the day to the South East team to remained unbeaten for the remainder of the day, playing well together and making their presence felt.

EIHA and Scottish Ice Hockey formed the U11 series of tournaments to give the players more competitive games against the better players from across the country, while a larger squad size enabled the Conferences to bring fringe and younger players into the system to experience Conference ice hockey for the first time.

Solway Sharks head coach Martin Grubb said: “It is really satisfying to see the younger players in the club come through and start to make their mark at the higher level.

“It is a great achievement not only for the players but also for their coaches and the Solway Sharks junior club. These kids always work hard and are keen to do their best and I am delighted that their efforts have been recognised and rewarded.

“The boys all played their hearts out, and are sure to have impressed the national coaches with their effort and determination, not to mention high level of skill.”
