A man was attacked at his Langholm home by four others in the early hours of Sunday.
The 22-year-old victim was set upon when he answered the door to his house at Station Buildings at 4.55am.
The four punched him on the head and body before he was able to close the door and phone the police.
He suffered two black eyes and cuts and bruising to his face and body.
Police are carrying out door to door enquiries in a bid to trace the thugs.
The first is described as being around six feet tall, of podgy build, in his mid to late 30s.
He had light brown hair cut short and a goatee beard and he was wearing a black waterproof jacket which had a white logo on the front and dark jeans.
The second man was about six feet tall and of skinny/slim build with sharp facial features and light brown/blonde hair.
He was in his late 20s/early 30s, and was wearing a grey/white hooded top with the hood up.
The third and fourth men were only described as being in their 30s and wearing hooded tops.
Constable Anthony Pallent said: “We are unsure as to the motive for this vicious and sustained attack on the victim at the front door to his home. We know that four men were present.
“I would ask that anyone who might be able to help in this investigation to call us on the 101 number or if they want to remain anonymous then through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
