A man who caused a major evacuation in Annan when he threatened to set fire to his home in which he believed there was a gas leak has been made the subject of a community payback order.
Nearby properties at Howgill Brae, Annan, were cleared as firearms officers, a police negotiator as well as extra police officers and 10 fire personnel raced to the scene on the night of January 2.
And the sheriff at Dumfries heard that James Agnew, repeatedly made threats of violence, brandished a wooden stake and knives, and threatened to harm himself and set fire to the property, before he was calmed down.
Agnew pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner, culpably and recklessly striking windows and breaking them, causing officers to take evasive action to avoid breaking glass.
He also admitted damaging property, throwing a number of household items, including a bath panel, a heater, ornaments and a knife out of the window.
In addition, Agnew admitted assaulting a police officer at Dumfries Police Station, behaving in a threatening manner and making threats of violence towards the custody officer as well as maliciously damaging the cell and CCTV camera.
He was put under supervision for 12 months.
■ A 23-year-old man who assaulted another in Moffat, has been made the subject of a community payback order with a condition he is under supervision for 12 months.
Michael Minto, of Green Loaning Villa, Mansefield Place, Moffat, pleaded guilty at Dumfries Sheriff Court to assaulting another man at Bath Place in Moffat in November by attempting to strike him on the head, struggling with him and causing him to fall onto the ground. He also admitted recklessly striking a vehicle and causing dents.
■ A 34-year-old man who entered the home of his ex-partner and hid himself in a bedroom, has been admonished by the sheriff at Dumfries.
Ian Lees, of Friars Vennel, Dumfries, pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening manner at Dunlop Road in June. A solicitor said Lees had gone to the house to collect some of his belongings following a break-up in the relationship and had left when asked.
