Houses evac­u­ated

A man who caused a ma­jor evac­u­a­tion in An­nan when he threat­ened to set fire to his home in which he be­lieved there was a gas leak has been made the sub­ject of a com­mu­nity pay­back or­der.

Nearby prop­er­ties at Howgill Brae, An­nan, were cleared as firearms of­fi­cers, a po­lice ne­go­tia­tor as well as ex­tra po­lice of­fi­cers and 10 fire per­son­nel raced to the scene on the night of Jan­uary 2.

And the sher­iff at Dum­fries heard that James Agnew, re­peat­edly made threats of vi­o­lence, bran­dished a wooden stake and knives, and threat­ened to harm him­self and set fire to the prop­erty, be­fore he was calmed down.

Agnew pleaded guilty to be­hav­ing in a threat­en­ing or abu­sive man­ner, cul­pa­bly and reck­lessly striking win­dows and break­ing them, caus­ing of­fi­cers to take eva­sive ac­tion to avoid break­ing glass.

He also ad­mit­ted dam­ag­ing prop­erty, throw­ing a num­ber of house­hold items, in­clud­ing a bath panel, a heater, or­na­ments and a knife out of the win­dow.

In ad­di­tion, Agnew ad­mit­ted as­sault­ing a po­lice of­fi­cer at Dum­fries Po­lice Sta­tion, be­hav­ing in a threat­en­ing man­ner and mak­ing threats of vi­o­lence to­wards the cus­tody of­fi­cer as well as ma­li­ciously dam­ag­ing the cell and CCTV cam­era.

He was put un­der su­per­vi­sion for 12 months.

■ A 23-year-old man who as­saulted an­other in Mof­fat, has been made the sub­ject of a com­mu­nity pay­back or­der with a con­di­tion he is un­der su­per­vi­sion for 12 months.

Michael Minto, of Green Loan­ing Villa, Manse­field Place, Mof­fat, pleaded guilty at Dum­fries Sher­iff Court to as­sault­ing an­other man at Bath Place in Mof­fat in Novem­ber by at­tempt­ing to strike him on the head, struggling with him and caus­ing him to fall onto the ground. He also ad­mit­ted reck­lessly striking a ve­hi­cle and caus­ing dents.

■ A 34-year-old man who en­tered the home of his ex-part­ner and hid him­self in a bed­room, has been ad­mon­ished by the sher­iff at Dum­fries.

Ian Lees, of Fri­ars Ven­nel, Dum­fries, pleaded guilty to be­hav­ing in a threat­en­ing man­ner at Dun­lop Road in June. A so­lic­i­tor said Lees had gone to the house to col­lect some of his be­long­ings fol­low­ing a break-up in the re­la­tion­ship and had left when asked.
