Stamp lovers get season under way
A splendid variety of philatelic material was on show at the first meeting of the new season of Dumfries Stamp and Postcard Club.
Four club members showed some interesting items for everyone to enjoy.
Iain Sutherland brought some postcards posted to a Robert Sinclair Wilson who was believed to have been a doctor in Dumfries during the 1930s.
Robert had been a keen philatelist and had got friends who went overseas to send him postcards with a cancelled stamp from the territory attached to the front. Postcards from Mauritius and Switzerland were featured among many.
John McGonigle showed some of the lovely engraved issues of Swedish stamps issued between 1978 and 1998. These included issues featuring famous Swedish explorers, threatened habitat and national parks.
Fred Cooper displayed some fascinating Second World War covers. These included covers sent from resettlement camps in the former Poland and the old Austrian Empire. One was sent by an SS Officer to his family back in Germany.
Finally, Hugh Beattie showed some of the attractive recess-printed commonwealth definitives and commemoratives issued during the early years of Queen Elizabeth’s reign.
Old postcard collectors, enthusiastic postal history buffs and stamp collectors are always welcome to join this friendly club who meet once a month. Further information from 01387 269828.
