Stamp lovers get sea­son un­der way

A splen­did va­ri­ety of philatelic ma­te­rial was on show at the first meet­ing of the new sea­son of Dum­fries Stamp and Post­card Club.

Four club mem­bers showed some in­ter­est­ing items for ev­ery­one to en­joy.

Iain Suther­land brought some post­cards posted to a Robert Sin­clair Wil­son who was be­lieved to have been a doctor in Dum­fries dur­ing the 1930s.

Robert had been a keen phi­lat­e­list and had got friends who went over­seas to send him post­cards with a can­celled stamp from the ter­ri­tory at­tached to the front. Post­cards from Mau­ri­tius and Switzer­land were fea­tured among many.

John McGonigle showed some of the lovely en­graved is­sues of Swedish stamps is­sued be­tween 1978 and 1998. These in­cluded is­sues fea­tur­ing fa­mous Swedish ex­plor­ers, threat­ened habi­tat and na­tional parks.

Fred Cooper dis­played some fas­ci­nat­ing Sec­ond World War cov­ers. These in­cluded cov­ers sent from re­set­tle­ment camps in the for­mer Poland and the old Aus­trian Em­pire. One was sent by an SS Of­fi­cer to his fam­ily back in Ger­many.

Fi­nally, Hugh Beat­tie showed some of the at­trac­tive re­cess-printed com­mon­wealth defini­tives and com­mem­o­ra­tives is­sued dur­ing the early years of Queen El­iz­a­beth’s reign.

Old post­card col­lec­tors, en­thu­si­as­tic postal his­tory buffs and stamp col­lec­tors are al­ways wel­come to join this friendly club who meet once a month. Fur­ther in­for­ma­tion from 01387 269828.
