Moffat work hard against Birkmyre
Moffat Rams hit the road for their first away game in Tennent’s West Division 3 against Birkmyre on Sunday.
The match was played at Greenock due to pitch works at the usual Kilmacolm pitches.
A glorious day by the sea didn’t start too well for the Rams and a slow start had them 21-0 down after 20 minutes.
The Rams collected the kick-off through a knock-on and started to lead the charge with runs from Scott Galloway, George Beamish and Martin Salaman.
Penalties were the order of the day from the man in the middle but no cards were shown.
The Rams soon found set piece form and dominated both lineouts and scrums.
It was the latter that got the Rams on the board with an excellent scrum and a number eight pick from Beamish set the platform for Max Douglas to find Salaman coming route one smashing his way through the defence and score, unconverted – 21-5.
Birkmyre responded with a unconverted try 26-5 but it was that man Salaman who popped up again and, like the previous score from open play, crashed over and was converted by Douglas 26-12 at half-time.
The second half got under way with Birkmyre still on the end of countless penalties.
Cammy Little kept the lines clear with some good kicks to the corner for the pack to work from.
Ryan Herdsman played well all game and got his pack in order from scrums to lineouts and off they mauled downfield.
Another penalty, this time from the scrum and after several rucks Gregory Robinson bundled his way over and was converted by Douglas making the score 26-19.
The tide had changed and a missed penalty from Douglas, a yellow card for Mark Smith for a high tackle and it was the Rams who soon found themselves leaking three scores after such great pressure. 41-19.
With time to spare and a rally from captain Johnny Little, the Rams hit back with a point to prove and take something from the game.
Charge after charge from the forwards nearly resulted in score but after some frantic play and a loose ball, it was Cammy Little who reacted and flicked the ball off the deck to Douglas who found Josh Burgess and finally onto Kieran Wood to dot down in the corner, converted by Douglas. Full time score 41-26. A disappointing final score which didn’t reflect the efforts on the pitch. Man of the match went to Martin Salaman and Ryan Herdsman.
