‘Lives at risk on A75 roundabouts’

Instructors’ fears over worn marks

Dumfries & Galloway Standard - - NEWS - Stuart McFarlane

A pair of driving instructors claim the poor state of roundabouts at Dumfries is putting motorists at risk.

Colin Hobbins and Paul Sharkey, from the Dumfries and District Driving Instructors Association, say a lack of markings on the Dalscone and Cuckoo Bridge roundabouts is leading to near-misses every day and confusing drivers.

Mr Sharkey said: “From a safety perspective, it’s ridiculous that the main route has two major roundabouts with frayed markings which are leading people to carry out dangerous manoeuvres.

“We’re having near-misses every day because people are overtaking on the left-hand side or going into the wrong lanes and cutting across.”

Mr Hobbins added: “We’re nearly getting side-swiped every time. Ordinary drivers are confused by the lack of adequate markings and it just becomes a free-for-all.

“It’s just a matter of time before we have a fatal accident.”

The instructors, who have 37 years’ experience, say the problems are causing problems during tests.

And they have been trying to resolve the situation with Scotland Transerv since last September.

Mr Sharkey added: “Anecdotally, we know of one crash when someone ran into a car which was on a test.

“People are putting their lives in their own hands because we have inexperienced drivers and putting them on the motorway is a doddle compared to driving around Dumfries at a busy time.

“We’re heard of an examiner taking a candidate round the roundabout three times before they were able to exit safely.

“We have pupils who are ending up in tears because of some of the things that have happened through no fault of their own.”

A Scotland Transerv spokesman confirmed plans were under way to restore the markings.

He added: “We are designing schemes to replace markings on the A75 at Dalscone and Cuckoo Bridge and aim to deliver this in the next few months.

“However, this is reliant on dry conditions for lining works.”
