It’s all go for gymnastics club
A sports club has been taking part in a tireless month-long fundraising effort in the hope of winning funding from a charity event.
Dumfries Y Gymnastics Club, based in English Street, is one of four finalists in the West Sound Big Charity Sports Challenge, with each group asked to raise as much money as possible for their respective causes within a month.
Members of all ages have already been taking part in an array of different activities – including a ‘stay awake’ in the gym between 8pm and 8am, a parkour challenge, a three-hour conditioning session and even a ‘dino’ gymnastics challenge for the club’s pre-school group.
The club has also carried out bucket collections across the town and some local businesses have lent a hand by agreeing to take on collection buckets and cans.
It has been going from strength to strength in recent years and with a membership of close to 300, the club now needs the financial backing to extend into the adjoining building to create more space for the gymnasts, alongside a specialist viewing reception for spectators and a warm-up and conditioning area. They hope to raise as much money as possible in the coming weeks, with the winning group earning a potential £3,500 of support.
The club’s Louise Ramsay told the Standard: “We’ve got a great team of fundraising officers who have worked hard to include all of the different age groups in a programme of events over the four-week period.
“We have some big plans to extend the premises that we currently use, but that is going to cost us a lot of money, so we’re going all out to raise that money and make the plans a reality. The support from the public has been really good and I think that’s because people see what we offer – not just the competitive squads, but also a good place for new mums to bring their children.
“We’ve also got a group of former gymnasts who are involved in a learn to coach programme.”
The club is at the halfway stage of its challenge – with a big Halloween party the next event in the offing.
