Big money spent badly

Dumfries & Galloway Standard - - STANDARD VIEW -

Sir – Here in Dumfries we have a leisure centre (not yet open ) costing around £30million; a new school costing £22million (shut for repairs ), an education hub (whatever that is) costing £11million and a proposed pile of rocks, grass and soil on the Whitesands costing upwards of £25million.

What on earth is going on? The council blames austerity for cuts in basic services but last week a council employee was spraying invisible weeds outside Marks & Spencer, and that same day I saw another trimming the edges of the playpark in Locharbriggs.

Dumfries town centre has recently won accolades for its floral displays (mainly the effort of private individuals ) and yet areas away from the centre are a disgrace.

The roundabout into Heathhall estate is an overgrown, rubbish and weed-infested mess.

It gets a token rough cut about once a year but really needs proper tiding up.
