A75 lorries clip sparks concern
Politicians hit out over bypass block footage
Shocking dashcam footage captured three lorries abreast on the A75.
The film of a trucker trying to overtake two other HGVs on the Gatehouse bypass has gone viral after being shared on Facebook.
And it has led to renewed calls for the road – dubbed “the longest goat track in Europe” – to be upgraded.
South of Scotland MSP Emma Harper said: “It is shocking to see footage of lorry drivers attempting these types of manoeuvres, particularly when it’s dark, raining and they’re travelling uphill.
“The driving in the video is completely unacceptable and I have written to Police Scotland to make sure they are aware of this recording and that action can be taken against the culprits.
“While the driving is inexcusable, the video does highlight the need for investment in the region’s transport infrastructure to make our roads safer.
“I intend to share this video with the Cabinet Secretary for Transport, as it backs up what many constituents tell me.”
South of Scotland MSP Colin Smyth, Labour’s transport spokesman, added: “These scenes are shocking. It is just luck that no one was seriously injured or killed.
“There is no doubt that the lack of safe overtaking places is a major problem on the A75 and one of the major causes of frustration although that does not justify dangerous driving in any way.”
There was cross-party support for investment in the A75 during a debate at Holyrood on Tuesday with Ms Harper and Mr Smyth’s calls being backed by MSPs Joan McAlpine and Finlay Carson.
The video was shared on social media by the Dual the A75 action group over the weekend.
A group spokesman said: “This shows HGV drivers are not immune to frustrations or reckless actions. One chooses to take to the oncoming lane for the entire length of the bypass and another overtakes around the chevrons at the blind summit of the hill.
“Were this dual carriageway, a central reservation would prevent this and the drivers would not have gone 20 miles without an overtaking opportunity.”
