Community hero

Top award for delighted Moniaive greengrocer

Dumfries & Galloway Standard - - DISTRICT NEWS -

A greengrocer described as the “hub of the community” has picked up an award for his engagement efforts.

Graham Watson, of Watson’s Grocers in Moniaive, was crowned Community Hero at the Scottish Grocers’ Federation as recognition for the store’s “highly innovative” involvement and engagement activities.

The store has been in business in the village for 18 years and Graham’s wife is also an active part of the community in her role as head teacher at the local primary school.

Graham said: “I would personally like to take this opportunity to thank my staff who have worked incredibly hard over the last 18 years and of course our fabulous and loyal customers who use the shop and make Moniaive and the surrounding community the very special place it is.

“The award has reinvigorated our store and inspired us to continue to do that little bit extra in the local community.

“This means a lot to all of us and is a real shot in the arm for the business.”

John Lee, SGF Head of Public Affairs, said: “The judging panel were hugely impressed by the highly innovative types of involvement that had taken place in – particularly around the music festivals, the living advent calendar and the photography project.

“The store truly is the hub of the community and this is a thoroughly well-deserved award for Graham.”
