Dumfries & Galloway Standard - - MEMORY LANE -

A charity cyclist with a difference turned heads as he crossed the Border at Gretna. Stuart Kettell was heading along the well used route to John o’Groats .. on a penny farthing. The self-confessed“mad fool” left Land’s End just 11 days before arriving in Gretna Green, and despite the fact the Victorian cycle was an original with solid tyres and no brakes, he was averaging more than 50 miles per day. Stuart was met by local representatives of Macmillan Cancer charity and our picture shows Jean Smith from the Gretna committee handing over a cheque for the proceeds of their World’s largest coffee morning event.
