Teenagers – what are your dreams for the future?

Our exclusive Young People’s Letter Writing Competition, with Peter Pan Moat Brae Trust, launches today.

Sending in a letter as a teenager to the Standard will be following the example of JM Barrie.

The playwright and author spent some of the happiest years of his life in Dumfries as a pupil at the academy and, during that time he loved writing letters, with many appearing in the Dumfries Standard.

From the age of 13 to 18, Barrie and his friends played in the gardens of Moat Brae House that later inspired him to write Peter Pan.

His letters and notebooks also talk about the number of times he wrote to the Standard.

And they suggest a young man who dreamed of a bright future involving stories, theatre and creative activities.

We have teamed up with the team at Moat Brae – which is being transformed into Scotland’s National Centre for Children’s Literature – for a letterwriting competition for youngsters aged between 13 and 18.

To enter they need to write their own letter, of not more than 350 words, about what they would like to achieve in their lives and start it with the words: “My dream for the future …”

Send it by post or hand in to our office, addressed: Moat Brae Letter, Dumfries and Galloway Standard, Park Lane, Dumfries, DG1 2AX. Or email it in to sharon. liptrott@reach

The winner will be presented with their prize by Peter Pan Moat Brae Trust patron Joanna Lumley during the Dreams for the Future celebrations.
