PAUL EVANS, MY CORNER OF THE FIELD: NOVEMBER 4-19
LAVENHAM based artist Paul Evans stages his annual exhibition this month, entitled My Corner of the Field.
The collection is the culmination of a whole year’s work and demonstrates superbly Paul’s ability to paint the beauty of the UK countryside, and nature as he sees it. The title has a double meaning – Paul is always out painting in the fields, and he has been painting for over 45 years to establish ‘his corner of the field’ in his distinctive contemporary style. His work is inspiring and uplifting, conveying at ‘feel good factor’ that everyone wants to experience.
Paul is one of the country’s most successful landscape painters at work in Britain today. His unique and original style reflects his infectious joy at recording, learning about and painting nature. He works in a variety of media including watercolours, inks and acrylics, and also enjoys making etching and linocuts, mainly inspired by East Anglia’s landscape and coast, the Sussex Downs, Kent Weald and Cornwall’s rugged coast and moorland. His paintings explore favourite locations capturing place, time, season and light.
Between 1972 and 1976, Paul studied children’s book illustration and printmaking at Eastbourne College of Art and Design with tutors Robert Tavener and Trevor Kemp, both renowned artists. It was while he was at college that Paul became involved with the Ralph Lewis Gallery in Brighton’s Lanes. His paintings sold as fast as he could paint them, which gave him confidence to make a living from his paintings. He opened Lavenham Contemporary Gallery in 1992, selling his original paintings along with prints, books and cards of his work. In addition to over 65 solo exhibitions and numerous group shows, more than 500 images of his work have been used commercially for greetings cards, calendars and limited edition prints by several large publishers, including Aquarelle, Kingsmead Publications, Royle Publications and Royal Doulton.
Paul’s work has been acquired by collectors all over the world and he also enjoys a loyal following closer to home. A limited edition book has been produced and is on sale at this exhibition along with his paintings. The exhibition runs November 4-19 at Lavenham Contemporary, Lavenham. www.paulevans-artist.co.uk
