500,000 cu­bic yards of con­crete typ­i­cally went into mak­ing a wartime air­field and roughly 10 miles of road were needed around the site. For hard­core, rub­ble was brought in from bomb-dam­aged cities. The US Army En­gi­neer Com­mand, 93rd Avi­a­tion Reg­i­ment, and Bri­tish con­trac­tors built the en­tire air­field with all its build­ings in just over a year (Sept 1942- Dec 1943).
