‘TOR’ ROPE, ARTIST IN STAINED GLASS

EADT Suffolk - - SUFFOLK WALK -

Distinguished local stained glass artist Margaret Edith Aldrich Rope (1891-1988), known as ‘Tor’, was niece of Royal Academician George Rope, who lived at Blaxhall. Her parents farmed Lower Abbey near Eastbridge and her father, Arthur, was a churchwarden at St Margaret’s Leiston for over 40 years.

Tor had an exact namesake cousin, Margaret (Agnes) Rope who was also a renowned artist in stained glass. For this reason, Tor signed her work with MEAR and a tortoise.

Margaret ‘Tor’ Rope’s stained glass windows in St Margaret’s Church, Leiston, depicts rural Suffolk life.
