It’s vital we make parking issue a top priority
Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of the East Kilbride News.
Our news feature on pages 4 and 5 today focuses on the lack of parking at Hairmyres Hospital and the railway station.
You may have seen in last week’s paper how NHS Lanarkshire staff formed a human barrier in a bid to change the behaviour of commuters who leave their vehicles in the hospital car park all day.
As a result, staff struggle to get parked while patients and relatives are put under additional stress as they try to find a space.
This isn’t a new issue. Parking at the hospital and rail station has been a discussion topic for some time. But what’s that famous phrase? Actions speak louder than words. Local government is presently in election mode but once votes have been cast it is vital everyone ensures this matter a key priority.
The message from government has been for people to leave their cars and use public transport.
But that means more spaces at parkand-ride facilities and good links both within East Kilbride and to places like Glasgow and Hamilton.
Yet there should also be an emphasis on personal responsibility and maybe those who do utilise the hospital car park – although not for hospital services – need to have a rethink. Elsewhere in the paper and Easter may be over and done with but we have two fantastic competitions you can enter.
On page 16, you could win a £50 gift card for East Kilbride Shopping Centre.
And on page 18 there is a chance to win a £50 gift card for the town’s Di Maggio’s restaurant.
Good luck – and remember, you’ve got to be in it to win it.
