Ballet bees buzz with excitement New class for youngsters with disabilities
A dance school with a difference launches in East Kilbride this weekend.
The first of its kind in Scotland, Ballet Bees will provide ballet dance tuition for children with additional support needs and life-limiting medical conditions.
Started by a group of local mums in conjunction with fundraising charity Buddy’s Field, Ballet Bees will provide an inclusive community giving children with disabilities and illnesses such as cancer, the opportunity to enjoy ballet-style dance alongside their friends.
Mum Susanne Bogan told the News: “When my daughter Emma turned five I started looking for a dance class for her and could not find a mainstream dance class in East Kilbride that would take her, and no disability classes were available.
“Unfortunately, there was nothing in Scotland. One of a kind
“Two years later I came across Flamingo Chicks which was absolutely perfect with the exception of being based in Bristol.
“Shortly after this I 010417balletbees_02
approached Buddy’s Field and asked if they could help start a class here. Finally, with the support of Magpie Dance, we are doing exactly that.
“Our class will be called Ballet Bees and will be open to all children, able-bodied, disabled and those with medical conditions such as cancer.
“Our vision is a world where disabled people have the same range of opportunities, and a culture of integrated social and wellbeing activity, where everyone works together as equals.”
Ballet Bees first class is this Saturday at 2pm in St Mark’s Church, The Murray. Classes cost £7.50. Susanne added: “Once word spreads we expect demand to be high as there is no other dance class like this available and we hope to add many more classes not just in East Kilbride but surrounding areas also.”
The group are aiming to raise £5000 through their JustGiving page for set up costs and are appealing for dance teachers and volunteers to get in touch.
