A Master Hutton Fitness trio are going for gold at the International Taekwondo Federation European Championships in Bulgaria this weekend.

Stephanie Willis, Alexander Gray and David Gray – all senior instructors at the club – have been selected to represent Scotland in Sofia from April 20 to 23.

Stephanie will compete in the 3rd degree individual pattern, 62kg individual sparring, individual power test, team sparring and team power events.

Alexander is set to contest the individual 3rd degree pattern event, while his brother David will feature in the individual 2nd degree pattern and the 85 kg individual and team sparring competitions.

During last year’s Euros in Finland, Willis had the misfortune of being drawn against the world champion in both of her first round events and made an early exit from the competition.

So she’s determined to make up for it and is targeting at least one gold medal from her five events.

She said:“I didn’t do so well in Finland, so I’m really hoping for a better championships this time.

“It’s very unusual to get the world champion in both rounds but I came away from that experience learning a lot. I felt it was very close and I wasn’t far away in both events, so I’d like to think I can medal in at least one event.

“Patterns is probably my best event but I feel I’ve got the potential to do well in a few of them.

“We’ve all been training non-stop and I know the guys have put everything into preparing for it as well. We are going there to give it our all and, hopefully, win some medals.”
