How time flies when you are enjoying yourself!

The year has rolled around again and it was time for the East Kilbride Probus Club AGM.

The meeting was opened by the president Barclay Sinclair with general remarks and then the minutes of last year’s AGM were read out by secretary John Mitchell and approved.

The president gave a review of a busy 12 months.

He talked about some of the various speakers and visits such as that to the Glasgow Lighthouse which he thought “was a terrific venue”.

He also commented on the wonderful picture that club photographer Jim Dunlop had taken during their visit to the Glasgow Synagogue in Garnethill in November.

He suggested that members “looked like the cast of ‘Still Game.’”

The Christmas Lunch had gone well and had been addressed by one of oldest members, Harvey Littlejohn.

The new year started well with Malcolm Boyd talking about The Panama Canal.

In February, there was a most successful ladies’ Valentine Lunch where the speaker had been Liz McIntyre who told members about the ‘Love Letters From a Desert Rat’ – her father’s letters home to her mother during the Second World War.

On March 19, the club celebrated its 25th anniversary with a dinner at the Bruce Hotel in East Kilbride.

A night of memories, photos, speeches and enjoyment which was marked with a commemorative pen and a group photo of the club members. This was a triumph of organisation by the secretary and the committee but especially John Mitchell who masterminded this on top of his other duties. He deserves the club’s thanks. Mr Sinclair wound up by thanking the people who had helped him through his presidency, especially Mr Mitchell who he described as “an organiser par excellence.”

He thanked the vice-president Allan Stevenson for his organising of the various outings and also thanked several other members of the committee and the club.

Mr Sinclair added: “The EK Probus is a successful and vibrant club and that success is due to you, the members, who participate in whatever role they undertake.

“But most of all, it is your attendance, commitment and repartee which has made my year as president so enjoyable – my grateful thanks to you all.”

The members applauded in appreciation. At this point, there was the handover of the chain of office to the new president, Mr Stevenson who presented Mr Sinclair with a past-president tie and lapel badge to mark the occasion.

Mr Stevenson’s first duty was to announce the tea break during which Mr Dunlop showed a montage of photos of past and present Probus events.

There followed the election of the new president and committee.

The new committee for 2017/2018 is: President Allan Stevenson; Vice-president John Walker; Treasurer Bill Lennie; Secretary John Mitchell; Roll keeper Tom Kennedy and committee members Ken Lawton (publicity officer) and Graham Livey.

Other competent business was dealt with, including the appointment of auditors, and Mr Stevenson concluded by saying he would carry out his duties to the best of his abilities.

He announced the start of the new season would be Wednesday, October 4.
