East Kilbride striker Aidan Ferris was left to rue two big early chances as his side lost out to Hamilton Accies on their Betfred Cup debut.

The new Kilby signing, who joined from BSC Glasgow, blew two golden opportunit­ies to give the Lowland League champions a shock lead.

Within 45 seconds he burst through the middle from Sean Winter’s pass and his effort was scuffed off target.

And Ferris should have found the net with 21 minutes on the clock when an awful pass back from Alex Gogic gifted him the ball 15 yards out, but he dragged his shot wide with only the keeper to beat.

Accies went on to take the lead through Darian MacKinnon in 39 minutes.

Kilby did level from the penalty spot via Sean Winter in 69 minutes but goals from Louis Longridge and Ali Crawford in the final nine minutes spared Accies’ blushes.

Ferris told the News: “I should be scoring. If I take those chances it’s 2-0 early on and it’s a completely different game.

“It would probably have been the biggest goals of my career, so it’s disappoint­ing.

“Midway through the game I was still thinking about it because they were big chances. The first one the defender has done well to get back but the second one I’ve really rushed the shot.

“With a bit more match sharpness I’m sure I would have scored them but that will come with more games.

“The positive thing is we’ve held a Premiershi­p side for a lot of the game. At
