Guide Dogs scheme backed

- Mark Pirie

Dr Lisa Cameron has backed the Streets Ahead campaign to keep pavements and paths free from clutter for people with guide dogs.

The East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow MP states that pavementparked cars, shop advertising boards and wheelie bins are having an impact on visually impaired people.

The SNP MP said it was vital to ensure streets are suitable for guide dogs to use and said: “A guide dog can really change someone’s life and the work that Guide Dogs Scotland does is so important.

“Ensuring that roads are wide enough, cars don’t park on pavements and that we have road crossings that are suitable for people with vision impairments is the way to make our roads safer and our pavements more inclusive.”

Niall Foley is the engagement manager at Guide Dogs Scotland.

He said: “It is terrifying for someone who cannot see oncoming traffic or has small children with them to take the risk of stepping out into a road because of cars parked on the pavement. Everyone should be able to walk the streets without fear.”
