Mucking in to get spot cleaned up

Historic site gets someTLC

- Nicola Findlay

Volunteers mucked in to help preserve an historically important beauty spot in East Kilbride.

The recently-formed Calderglen Heritage organisation and South Lanarkshire Greenspace Rangers took part in a much-needed spruce up of trails which pass in and around the ruin of Calderwood Mausoleum and the old Castle Lawn.

Calderglen Heritage aims to protect and preserve the Calderglen gorge – and help more people access and enjoy it into the future.

These lesser-visited features of Calderglen Country Park are remnants of the landscape around the former Calderwood Castle.

The mausoleum was built around 1780-90 to inter members of the Maxwells of Calderwood.

In the 1840s, the 8th Baronet, Sir William, had another mausoleum erected just across the path to inter his favourite horses.

Over the years the well-used trails have worn down and the access steps are in need of digging out.

Chris Ladds, chair of Calderglen Heritage, said: “We had a beautiful sunny morning to tackle the group’s first conservation tasks; clearing the previously slippery steps around the mausoleum and improving drainage to a particularly wet and muddy path.

“Everyone enjoyed working out in the fresh air and chatting to each other, as well as getting a real sense of achievement by improving Calderglen.

“Thanks to the volunteers and the countryside rangers for their support and to find out more join the Calderglen Heritage Facebook page to hear about future events.”
