-

Calderwood ice skater Keira Haazen is celebrating after winning her first level two competition in Aberdeen recently.

The 10-year-old was competing against 24 skaters in an open age category where she was one of the youngest skaters.

A pupil at Maxwellton Primary School, Keira skates for EK Ice Figure Skating Club and this success was her fourth consecutive victory.

Proud mum Ruth told the News her daughter hopes her performances will lead to a call up to the GB team.

She said: “She really wants to make it to the GB Squad soon and one day compete in international competitions.

“Keira works very hard to make sure she skates her best and loves competitions as she gets the whole ice to herself.

“She forgets about everything else when she’s skating and feels that the hard work and early mornings are worth it when she wins trophies.

“Keira loves her coaches Yvonne and Silvanna and has made many close friends in the club.“

Coach Yvonne Cameron has been impressed with Keira’s performances.

“Keira is very hard working and loves to compete and travel with her friends and teammates,”she said.“She is hoping to get to the British Championships next year and has already competed all over the UK.”

Keira didn’t start skating until she was six but has enjoyed every moment since taking up the sport.

She said: “I love to skate. It makes me feel really happy.

“My favourite bit is spinning really fast.”
