New junk food proposals could risk indigestion

- Colin Paterson

Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of the East Kilbride News. Have we had our chips? On pages 4 and 5 of today’s paper, we have a special news feature on Scottish Government proposals aimed at improving the nation’s health.

Among the matters being considered are reductions in portion sizes and calorie counts, clamping down on promotional offers like three-fortwo when it comes to junk food, and restrictions on advertising in relation to eating and drinking things not necessarily good for us.

We hit the streets of East Kilbride town centre to get the views of businesses and customers alike.

As someone who has been known to frequent the odd chippy, the idea of the state telling a restaurant or takeaway how much I can be served does not particularly sit well with me.

And will action such as this even work? What would stop an individual ordering two fish suppers if he felt the portion in his usual one wasn’t enough?

When it comes to eating out, some of us are lucky if we can do it once a week so are we really going to start legislating on what for many people is a treat?

There are restaurants who already offer customers smaller portion sizes because a plate overflowing with food can put off some folk.

A consultation is underway so what do you think of it all?
