Lead­ing sport ac­co­lade for Dun­can­rig

They just love go­ing for gold at Dun­can­rig Sec­ondary.

And staff and pupils at the Win­nipeg Drive school are burst­ing with pride af­ter re­ceiv­ing the pres­ti­gious sportscot­land School Sport Gold Award for the sec­ond time.

Only a hand­ful of schools across Scot­land have achieved the ac­co­lade on two oc­ca­sions.

But Dun­can­rig have joined that elite group af­ter be­ing put to the test in nine core ar­eas, in­clud­ing phys­i­cal ed­u­ca­tion, com­pe­ti­tions and per­for­mance, cel­e­brat­ing sport and fa­cil­ity ac­cess for com­mu­ni­ties.

The award is an ini­tia­tive funded by the Na­tional Lot­tery and de­signed to en­cour­age schools to con­tin­u­ously im­prove when it comes to PE and sport­ing op­por­tu­ni­ties.

Dun­can­rig clinched the award with back­ing from South La­nark­shire ac­tive schools, South La­nark­shire Coun­cil, South La­nark­shire Leisure and Cul­ture, sportscot­land and other lo­cal sport­ing part­ners.

De­lighted head teacher Ge­orge Wynne said: “The award of gold sta­tus for the sec­ond time is a huge hon­our to our school and re­flects the pos­i­tiv­ity to­wards sport and healthy life­styles within our school com­mu­nity.

“It also recog­nises the amount of hard work and de­ter­mi­na­tion to en­gage pupils pos­i­tively in a huge range of sports.

“I would like to ex­press my grat­i­tude to all the staff in­volved in our out­stand­ing range of op­por­tu­ni­ties for our pupils and the sports cap­tains, sports am­bas­sadors and sports lead­ers at all stages in our school who make sport and healthy liv­ing an in­te­gral part of our school cul­ture.

“I would also like to thank col­leagues from all our ex­ter­nal part­ners who sup­port us so ef­fec­tively.”
