Gym aims to net cash for Sam’s big charity

An East Kilbride gym has shown its support for a star schoolboy fundraiser by offering health MOTs in return for a charity donation.
Twelve-year-old Calderwood boy Sam Hanna suffers from a complex bladder condition and, despite having to undergo 33 operations and constant medical scans and tests, he has raised an incredible £16,000 for the Glasgow Children’s Hospital charity.
The youngster is hosting a charity fundraiser at East Kilbride’s British Legion on Friday, April 20 and hopes the people of his home town will dig deep to help make the event a success.
Nuffield Health East Kilbride has already pledged to help Sam reach his £20,000 target.
The fitness centre carries out health and wellbeing assessments on its members; checking their blood pressure, BMI, resting heart rate, cholesterol and glucose levels and, in some cases, have identified serious health conditions.
Combined with regular fitness programmes, the assessments help their members lead far healthier and happier lives.
The sponsors of Lowland League East Kilbride FC recently gave health MOTs to some of the Kilby players – including team captain Barry Russell, who insists the checks can save lives.
He said: “You often hear about athletes who suffer health scares with underlying heart conditions and it’s great that these tests can potentially flag up issues. “They can literally save your life.” A Nuffield Health spokeswoman said: “We would love to help Sam reach his goal so we are encouraging our entire community to make any donation large or small when they come along to our club for a health check.”
