Two Duncanrig Secondary pupils got their points across when they competed at a public speaking event in Edinburgh.

Fergus Kane and Maria Goodarzi represented Duncanrig at the ESU national finals of the Speakers’ Corner Challenge (S1-3) and the senior public speaking competition (S4-6) at St Cecelia’s Hall.

There were nine speakers in each final and both of the Duncanrig pupils performed very impressively – there were three taking part who spoke without notes at all, with Fergus and Maria two of those competitors.

English teacher Jo Whiteford said: “Sadly, neither was declared the overall winner in their category.

“It was a very close run thing, especially in the senior category, and Maria was very unlucky not to have won. She spoke about equality in education for girls, whilst Fergus considered the difference made by ordinary people during the Civil Rights movement.

“They are both to be congratulated on reaching the national finals.”
