Girls overpowered in Scottish Cup tie
Try hard An understrength East Kilbride Rugby Club under-15 girls team found Lismore too physical and too experienced in their Scottish Cup tie, going down to a heavy defeat at Torrance House on Sunday.
The Edinburgh girls presented a big, imposing unit who blew EK away in the early exchanges, running in a rake of unanswered tries to all but end the contest after 20 minutes.
Eventually though East Kilbride gained some degree of parity, particularly up front, where the makeshift front row of Abbie Meyer, Emma Watson and Laura Vassie put serious pressure on their opponents.
Captain Kirsty Ritchie scored the only EK try in the first half, going over in the corner just before the break. Lismore continued to dominate the second half, continually dispossessing EK at the tackle.
But the home side did retain enough of the ball for half backs Evie McLure and Cavan Ryan to set strong running centre Charli Boan free for a couple of scores, while Hannah Macmahon and Ritchie also crossed.
Five tries was a reward for the efforts of the EK girls, but there was a definite gulf between the sides which can only be addressed on the training field.
• Meanwhile, EK’s senior team had their match with Garnock called off on Saturday due to a waterlogged pitch.
They now host Annan on Saturday, kick-off 3pm at Torrance House.
