Light touch

This month cosmetic surgeon BIJAN BEIGI talks about IPL facial rejuvenation. What is it and can it really change the look of our skin?

Lasers are making an impact on skincare

What exactly is IPL?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light and the technology it harnesses is actually similar to a laser. There are a wide range of IPL options available but here at the clinic we use Els, which is the first technology that combines bipolar radio frequency and optical energy (either laser or light).

So what does it do?

With IPL technology the light energy penetrates just below the skin’s surface so it is a highly effective option for precisely and safely targeting a variety of skin conditions, including pigmented lesions such as freckles, sunspots and age spots. IPL rejuvenation should also be considered for tackling other issues, such as vascular lesions and spider veins, and with the right IPL course, redness from rosacea or facial flushing can also be lightened and gradually fade.

Can anyone have IPL facial rejuvenation?

As with all of the treatments we undertake here at the clinic, patients are treated on a case-bycase basis, as not all treatments are necessarily right for every skin type. So if someone is considering IPL they will firstly meet with one of our experienced practitioners to discuss their medical history, determine their eligibility, discuss details of the actual treatment and perform a test patch.

Are there any after-effects to the treatment?

Immediately after treatment you may notice a darkening of the lesion however this settles within 24 hours and you are able to return to your everyday activities. Sensitive skin can sometimes swell slightly but again this is very short-lived. Make-up can be applied immediately after to help cover any redness on the skin.

Is it painful?

You may experience a sensation a bit like a bee sting during each procedure and the skin will feel warm but it is not an aggressive treatment.

How long does it take until you see results?

Results can take effect anywhere from one to six sessions and treatments are carried out monthly. So this is not a quick or easy fix, but it is highly effective and, as such, it is worth investing the time to see an improvement in skin tone.
