Here comes the science bit

Want to colour your hair but not sure what will look best? Lucy Ferguson, from John Olivers, reveals it’s about much more than picking your favourite shade

EDP Norfolk - - PROMOTION -

There’s always something new to learn – that’s the message from John Olivers hairdressing group. From the trainees signed up to JO Academy, to the top stylists, the learning never stops.

Every Wednesday for three months, level six creative stylist Lucy Ferguson travelled to Hammersmith for L’Oréal Colour Specialist training. The course is for senior colourists who wish to take their knowledge to a specialist level – Lucy had to take an exam just to be accepted!

Graduating with distinction in March, Lucy is the highest colour trained stylist in the John Olivers group. “It’s about so much more than just choosing a colour,” says Lucy. “We were taught how to look at the distribution of pigment in the hair and identify the shades that will give the best result.”

And although bright, bold colours are very much on trend at the moment, Lucy says most people want something that’s going to look natural and healthy. “Working with what the client has naturally, including their skin tone and eye colour, creates a result that’s bespoke to each client,” she says.

Lucy is always on hand to offer colour advice to the other stylists, who each have their own specialisms. In fact, John Olivers is using individual profiles on its Instagram page to help clients see the diversity of the stylists. “We all have areas that we specialise in, and that’s a good thing,” says Tiggy Elsden-Powell, a level three stylist and social media manager. “The Instagram profiles include stylists biographies and pictures of their work, and are a great way for potential customers to get an insight into the stylists and see what their strengths are.”

And it’s not just the stylists that are featured, the trainees and receptionists are also included, so clients can get to know all the faces at the salon before they visit. “We’re a friendly and relaxed salon, and the trainees and receptionists are an essential part of the team – we couldn’t do it without them.”
