THE BIG IDEA... Stanford Skiing

This Norwich-based holiday company has found a wonderful place for year-round breaks, as director Elizabeth Cahir explains

EDP Norfolk - - STANFORD SKIING -

Who is Stanford Skiing?

Stanford Skiing is a family-run company, based in Norwich, run by myself with help from my father, mother and sister. We offer ski and summer chalet, selfcatered and hotel holidays to the picturesque, French alpine resort of Megeve.

So it’s just winter holidays then?

No, summer too. It’s wonderful in Megeve in the summer and it can be very hot. It is a very beautiful resort with cobbled streets and horse-drawn carriages. There’s loads to do from hiking to canyoning and paragliding to just relaxing with ‘un verre’ and watching the world go by….

I’m a cyclist; is there anything for me in Megeve?

Yes, loads. Megeve hosted the Tour de France for three days two years ago so, if you’re a road cyclist, there’s any number of cols that you can tick off – the Col des Aravis, Col de la Colombières and the infamous Col des Saisies to name a few. We have routes on our website to give you some ideas.

If you are a mountain biker there are several purpose-built singletracks in Megeve with rollers, jumps and bridges. I have only been brave enough to try the blue and that was hard enough!.

You can take lifts up to the top with your bike to save on the legs. There are also plenty of wider tracks labelled according to difficulty and you can plan a circular trip. See our website for a route map.

This summer we hired out electric mountain bikes. You can get to the top so much more easily – great for the kids and the notquite-as-fit-as-you-might-wish adults. You do still have to put in effort but you still have some energy left to enjoy the fantastic views of Mont Blanc and to face the nerve-wracking downhill!

What about the family?

There’s so much to do as a family. We go every year and have done since the kids were little; they’re now 15 and 10 and are really enjoying all the activities the mountains have to offer. You can go hiking, white water rafting, paragliding, climbing, horse riding and more. There’s a brilliant high ropes course in Megeve for those who like to get up in the air – my kids love this. We took things a step further this year and did a Via Ferrata – a protected climbing route with fixed cables – that’s the description but I have to say I didn’t feel very protected!

It was scary but a huge achievement. We have a list of everything you can do on our website. For relaxation, enjoy chilling at one of the lakes with amazing views or sunbathing at the pool in Megeve.

What’s the Big Idea for Stanford in the next year?

The Big Idea is to open our superior chalet Les Clochettes on a catered basis so our guests can enjoy a wonderful holiday in Megeve without worrying about cooking. We will help you to book any activities you may wish to do, give you itineraries/maps and we’ll even drop you off/pick you up for your outings so you don’t need to bring the car.

Megeve is just 70 minutes from Geneva airport and we can transfer you from there to the chalet. All guests need to do is to book their flights.

We have been enjoying Megeve in the summer for years as a family and we feel that it’s about time we gave other people the chance to fall in love with the place as well!

For more information see stanfordskiing.co.uk or call 01603 477471.

Prices start from £450 per person in our catered chalet Les Clochettes, excluding flights and transfers.
