I have an Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’ in a container and would like to plant it in the garden but l have alkaline soil. Will it thrive if planted out?
Acer palmatum are not as difficult to grow as many people imagine. They will grow in alkaline soil and even on chalk if there is a good depth of soil. Their main dislike is wind, especially early in the season when the new leaves are unfurling. Pick a sheltered spot in sun or part shade to provide plenty of light to give your Bloodgood good colour; also work some good compost into the soil before planting to give your Acer the best possible start.
