A FORMER public toilet in Walton is up for sale – but you will need to spend more than a penny if you want to get your hands on this lavatory block.

The 0.023-hectare Church Street loo, previously owned by Elmbridge Borough Council, is going to auction later this month with a guide price of £100,000.

The boarded-up building itself might be bog standard but it is described by auctioneer Allsop LLP as having ‘possible potential for redevelopment subject to obtaining all consents, statutory or otherwise’.

Auctioneer Gary Murphy, a partner at Allsop, said: “We have sold a few toilets over the years. It’s often very interesting to leave it to the buyers to use their imagination as to what alternative uses might be.

“We would assume this site would be used for development but it depends on what the council thinks. The new owner would explore that.

“The guide price of £100,000 is a good buy. These quirky lots are hard to value. The buyers tell us what it’s worth when they put their hands in the air.

“There’s a possibility it could go for more. It’s all to play for.”

Mr Murphy said the lot had been popular so far, with viewings well attended.

He said the Allsop sign had been taken down a couple of times, something regarded as positive as people are trying to hide when the site will be auctioned.

“It’s a good sign when the sign is pulled down,” he added. “It means people are interested.”

The lot is for sale by auction on Wednesday and is open for viewing on Saturday and Tuesday before the auction between 9.30am and 10am.

An Elmbridge Borough Council spokesman said the toilets, which closed in 2009, were due to be sold after being ‘declared surplus to requirements’ in 2010.
