No inquest into death of Michael Payne
THE father of murdered Hersham schoolgirl Sarah Payne died from natural causes, tests have shown.
Michael Payne, 45, was found dead at his flat in Maidstone, Kent, on October 27.
Sarah, who went to Bell Farm School, was abducted by paedophile Roy Whiting near her grandparents’ home in West Sussex in July 2000 when she was eight.
Her body was found a few weeks later by a farmer.
Mr Payne had subsequently fought a long battle with alcoholism and depression.
After tests were ordered by a coroner, it was established that he died from natural causes. His funeral was held on November 24.
A spokesman for the coroner’s office said: “A post-mortem examination was carrier out on Mr Michael Payne on November 3. It confirmed that he died of natural causes. In such circumstances, the coroner will not be opening an inquest into his death.”
Mr Payne’s mother, Cynthia, said at the time of his death in October: “It was as though he was followed by evil. He was a wonderful son and a great father but he had demons he could not shake.
“I think he drank himself into oblivion to escape the pain and his poor body gave up on him.”
