Angels delight for Met Police

Egham News - - FOOTBALL -

Ryman Premier Tonbridge Angels 0 Met Police 2 A STATEMENT of intent – that is what Jim Cooper is hoping his side have finally made after picking up only their second away win of the campaign.

Blues have struggled on their travels, having beaten only Wingate & Finchley on October 21 before this success, which came courtesy of a solid defensive display and goals from Bradley Hudson-Odoi and Ryan James either side of half time.

“It was quite a rare result for us and we were good value for the win,” said Cooper. “I don’t think Tonbridge can have any complaints. We defended well when we had to and offensively we did the right things to make it work for us.”

Blues now sit sixth in the table and Cooper added: “If we can address our away form, and hopefully this is the start, then we can push on into the play-off places.

“I’m quite happy where we are in the table right now.”

Perhaps a gauge of Met Police’s improvement could be made by looking at their bench, with Nigel Neita, Matt Pattison, Ricardo Joseph and Charlie Collins all among the substitutes.

After an initial hosts’ surge, the action moved upfield as Elliot Taylor made a foraging run down the right and clipped a cross into the box that was only partially punched clear.

The ball fell to Nikki Ahamed on the edge of the box but he lifted his shot over the corner of bar and post.

The Met continued to dominate but spurned several chances before they struck in the 36th minute.

Will Salmon and Ahamed exchanged a quick one-two on the right edge of the penalty area and when Salmon’s centre was met with hesitation in the hosts’ danger zone, Hudson-Odoi controlled, stepped inside and curled a right-footed shot from 16 yards out into the far corner.

The lead was doubled a minute after the re-start when Salmon lifted a cross towards the penalty spot where James arrived to nod a looping header into the net.

Most Tonbridge efforts flew straight at Stuart Searle and Met defended resolutely and comfortably after that. And they might have added to their lead once Collins and Pattison were introduced for Dean Bown and Ahamed as further opportunities were created.

Police travel to East Thurrock tomorrow and Cooper added: “We have some important games coming up. We need to accumulate as many points as possible.”
