Two new cof­fee-ta­ble tomes that take you to the UK’S best land­marks. City Go un­der the red vel­vet cur­tain into 45 of the most ex­trav­a­gant ed­i­fices in the cap­i­tal: its the­atres. Pub­lished this month, Lon­don The­atres (Quarto, £30) takes you from gilt West End won­ders to sub­ter­ranean play­houses and, of course, the Bru­tal­ist con­crete jun­gle that is the Na­tional Theatre. Coun­try The mist­ily at­mo­spheric These Is­lands: A Por­trait of the Bri­tish Isles (Fran­cis, £45), pro­duced by the mak­ers of travel mag­a­zine Ce­real, cap­tures the land­scapes of the Bri­tish Isles via beau­ti­fully shot pho­to­graphs, along­side es­says, po­ems and art­works, all printed on tac­tile G.F Smith pa­per. Na­ture-in­spired ar­chi­tect Spencer Fung’s land­scape paint­ings are a high­light, as is the longer read on ‘the ro­mance of rain’.
