DANIELLE MacDONALD

THE AUSTRALIAN ACTOR HAS BEEN CALLED THE NEXT JENNIFER LAWRENCE

ELLE (UK) - - Play -

When Danielle MacDonald, 26, bagged the lead in Patti Cake$ (out 1 September), a film about an aspiring New Jersey rapper, she’d never attempted a New Jersey accent and she’d definitely never rapped. Living in LA since she was 18, the Australian star had enjoyed moderate success with TV parts, but when she donned Patti’s faux-fur jacket, everything changed. ‘It felt terrifying!’ she admits. Film JULIE director Geremy Jasper sent her mixtape after mixtape until she became a fledgling rapper. And when the film was screened at Sundance in January, audiences went wild, with festival director John Cooper ADENUGA dubbing her the next Jennifer Lawrence. She’s since landed her second lead, starring alongside Jennifer Aniston in YA adaptation Dumplin’. Like Patti, her Dumplin’ character smashes stereotypes – in this case, about a beauty queen’s looks. ‘I want to send positive messages,’ she says. ‘That’s my number one thing.’
