THE COLOMBIAN SINGER MAKING WAVES IN MODERN SOUL

Kali Uchis cites Aretha Franklin and Astrud Gilberto as her heroes, and though their influence is tangible (her music veers from soul to beat-laden R&B), her own style is distinctly 2017. Tyrant is Kali’s dancefloor-ready ‘post-apocalyptic love song’, while dancehall-infused Ridin Round is the perfect antithesis to years of male bravado in hip-hop. The singer was 18 when she released her first mixtape, Drunken Babble, but she’d already spent years forging a name for herself making and selling clothes to her classmates. ‘My dad was homeless as a child; he raised me to be hard-working. I grew up learning to be innovative,’ she says. Born in Northern Virginia and raised between there and Pereira, Colombia, Kali is now LA-based. Aside from still making her own clothes (think Brigitte Bardot meets Nicki Minaj), it’s her music that’s now taking centre stage.
