Steph spent her childhood moving from Singapore to the Caribbean before she eventually landed in the UK. Now, the photographer lives alone in Brixton, but has plenty of company: ‘I have 3O canaries, a blue parrot, and Ham, my miniature Pomeranian.’ She got into photography by taking pictures to use as reference for her paintings, and now shoots Adwoa Aboah and cool-girl musicians Kelela and M.I.A. Feminism and the importance of the female gaze is central to her work: ‘Most imagery is shot by men. We see the world through a male gaze; it’s imperative that we have a balance of male and female photographers to portray how we view the world.’ Her autumn highlight? ‘My dog’s stunning winter coat.’
