OUT 4 august / CERT 15 / 109 Mins director Morgan Matthews cast Sir Frank Williams, Claire Williams, Virginia Williams, David Brodie, Nigel Mansell
THE UPS AND down of family-run Formula 1 team Williams, focusing on its tenacious owner Sir Frank Williams (a quadriplegic since 1986), his late wife (present via audio tapes of her autobiography) and daughter Claire, who’s now effectively in charge of the business. This multi-perspective approach has value. Not only does it emphasise the importance of the Williams women, it also stops the doc from getting too hagiographic, while keeping it personal — their commentary emphasises what a difficult man Sir Frank can be and how he’s always put his obsession with F1 above anything else, them included. But it does make a rather scrappy structure, broadly chronological, but with some diversions slowing its narrative momentum.
