OUT 22 SEPTEMBER / CERT 15 / 101 MINS DIRECTOR Maysaloun Hamoud CAST Mouna Hawa, Shaden Kanboura, Sana Jammelieh

Empire (UK) - - ON.SCREEN -

ARAB-ISRAELI DIRECTOR Maysaloun Hamoud’s debut feature has been a huge festival hit and with its fresh, vivid perspective on today’s Palestinian woman, deserves to find a much bigger audience than the independent cinemas it would usually call home. The story of three female friends and flatmates — lawyer and party girl Laila (Hawa), gay Dj/bartender Salma (Jammelieh) and Islamic small-town student Nour (Kanboura) — it skilfully examines what freedom means to women caught between Arab and liberal Israeli societies. Both a subversive take on patriarchy and a thrilling portrait of modern sisterhood, it gives thrilling voice to a female story so rarely heard.
