Given ITS SETTING — the build-up to the 2015 new Zealand national Poultry Show — you’d be forgiven for thinking this was a Christopher Guest mockumentary. But no, the leadership struggle for the Christchurch Poultry, Bantam And Pigeon Club that forms much of the action is real — albeit played out by slightly eccentric characters. Sadly, it’s the least interesting aspect of the film, taking time away from observing the (genuinely impressive) birds and learning about these passionate chook-heads’ craft. it’s an engaging enough delve into a niche scene, but for all the interesting characters and vibrantly feathered birds, it feels a little too lacking in colour.
