GOON WAS A rather sweet sports comedy about finding your value in the world even when you’re lacking in exceptional talent. Six years on, this sequel adds little and freezes out most of the heart of the original in favour of cruder jokes from broader characters. Enforcer Doug ‘The Thug’ Glatt (Scott) is promoted to captain. However, injuries, a new boss and impending fatherhood suggest Doug’s days as a minor sports star may soon be over. Co-writer Jay Baruchel also directs here (his debut), but he struggles to get any purchase on the story. Everyone’s trying to recapture the appeal of the original, but it should have remained a cult one-off.
